Instructions for JEMS

How to Retrieve the Import Template:

Download JEMS import template  . A window will open displaying a single file inside called "TEMPLATE.xls." This is the import template that was developed for importing transactions into JEMS. You will have one of three options for using this file:

  • If you are viewing this page using Internet Explorer (IE), and already have Excel installed on your computer, clicking on this file may cause Excel to open within IE and the spreadsheet to display automatically. This will allow you to enter and edit values within the spreadsheet. However, you will have to save the data to a file on your local computer in order to import the data into JEMS.
  • If you're viewing this page using IE, and you want to save a local copy of the template to your computer so you don't have to go to the same Web page each time to create a new import file.  Instead, you can right-click on the file link, and select "Save Target As..." from the shortcut menu. Select where on your computer you'd like to save the file. Please pay close attention to this location, as it is where you will need to go to open this file to prepare your import.
  • If you are using Netscape, clicking on the file link should automatically prompt you to select a location to save the file. Make special note of where you are saving the file, so you will be able to find it for use after it has been downloaded.

Note: JEMS currently only supports tab-delimited text files.  When saving the file in Excel, you must save it as type "Text (Tab-Delimited)" so that it can be imported into JEMS. For more information, see below.

Saving to a text file within Excel:

  • Create a new workbook, or open a previously saved workbook.
  • Click Save (File menu) for a new workbook, or Save as (File menu) for a previously saved workbook.
  • In the File name box, type the file name for the workbook.
  • Under Save as type, click Text (Tab delimited).
  • Click Save.
  • If you have created a new workbook with multiple sheets, click OK in the first dialog box that asks you to verify that you want to save only the active sheet in Text (Tab delimited) format. Click Yes in the next dialog box that asks you if you want to keep your file in this format.
  • If you have opened a previously saved workbook or created a new workbook containing only one worksheet, click Yes in the dialog box that asks you if you want to keep your file in this format.

Note: The TEMPLATE.xls file is marked as "read-only," so when you attempt to save any changes you have made to this file, you will need to save it to a different file name.

Support policy for JEMS Running on Windows 95

The JEMS support staff has recently received many support requests from across the university, some of which are from units on campus using the Windows 95 operating system, which is no longer supported by Microsoft Corp.  While all of the support calls are important to us, the Division of Financial Affairs has joined Microsoft Corp and discontinued support for JEMS on the Windows 95 operating system. Below is a summary of some of the factors taken into account when making this decision.

  • Microsoft Windows 95 has not been supported by Microsoft Corp since Nov 30, 2001.
  • Windows 98 / 98 SE and NT 4.x have been in an "Extended Phase" of support since June 30, 2002. Microsoft Corp will no longer support these operating systems after June 30, 2003.

  • CIT's minimum systems requirements no longer list Windows 95 as an acceptable operating system. (http://www.cit.cornell.edu/computer/recommend/general.html). Also note the minimum requirements of 64MB of RAM for Win98 and 128MB for all other OS. These minimum RAM requirements are worthwhile to note, as JEMS tends to require a fair amount of RAM to run (between 15 and 25 MB).
  • CIT explicitly states that it no longer supports Windows 95. (http://www.cit.cornell.edu/computer/system/whichos/)
  • CIT offers services to help units upgrade to newer versions of operating systems at greatly reduced rates. Contact software-programs@cornell.edu or go to http://www.cit.cornell.edu/software/licenses/msselect/ for more information.
  • Cornell's computing directors have defined a set of standards for computers used to carry out administrative functions at the university. (http://www.ccd.cornell.edu/ccd_std_system.html) These standards do not list Windows 95 as an acceptable operating system for use in units.
